Travel Experiences: Hiking & Outdoors
Hiking and outdoor travel experiences are a fantastic way to get out into the world. For two people who always have an opinion on everything, nothing can shut us up quite like a the incredible views we've seen whilst hiking.
We find that exploring the geography of a place is invigorating. A lot of the time, we look for day hikes or activities that are easily accessible from main centres, so we get a break from the hustle and bustle of a city for a day without needing to hire a car.
Nature brings us a sense of stillness and calmness, and an added bonus is that its exercise that doesn't feel like exercise... especially good considering we usually overindulge in other areas of holiday! From hiking up to Mirrador las Torres to riding our bikes through Tuscany and rafting through Lapataia Bay in Tierra del Fuego, some of our favourite travel experiences have been in the great outdoors.

How to plan a Hiking & Outdoor Travel Experience…
Where are the best places to hike in the world?
There are thousands of hiking trails across the world that allow you to get up close and personal with nature. For beginners, we recommend day trips and short hikes out of your usual holiday destinations - you'll soon get the hiking bug!
For a dedicated walking holiday, there are plenty of destinations known for being a hiker's paradise, where you can explore wilderness in almost every direction. Jaw-dropping scenery is guaranteed in places like El Chalten in Patagonia, Banff National Park in Canada, or Mount Blanc in France.
When it comes to multi-day hikes and outdoor destinations there are plenty to choose from. The Inca Trail up to Machu Picchu is top of a list of famous treks, along with the climb to Ciudad Perdida (Colombia), the W Trek in Torres del Paine (Chile) or taking on part of the Appalachian Trail (the USA). Lesser known experiences are just as beautiful - we loved taking on part of the South West Coastal Path in Cornwall, UK, and the journey through the Accursed Mountains from Shkoder to Theth has been on our bucket list for a long time!
How to find hiking and outdoor experiences while travelling…
There is always a way to include outdoor activities into your trips to almost any destination. It's a great way to get to know more about an area and experience it as someone who lives there might. When we visit cities, we often look for short day trips out of the hustle and bustle and into nature. It's the perfect recipe - the culture, arts, dining and nightlife of a city, but also a chance to relax!
Think of it like a local who wants to escape to the country, what would they do? You'll be surprised at what you will find. You can climb Vesuvius from Naples, enjoy water sports on the shorts of Lake Bled just an hour from Ljubljana or hike between the colourful villages of Italy's Cinque Terre.
And it's not only hiking. If you are willing to try something new, there's often lessons or tours to help you get a taste of the local past time. If you're near the ocean, look into surfing lessons or water sports that are popular in the area. In a country with good cycle infrastructure it’s a missed opportunity if you don’t hire bikes and explore on two wheels! Cities with rivers also have great activities, from swimming in the Rhine in Basel to rafting down the Arno in Florence, we've managed to enjoy some great outdoor experiences on city breaks, too!
After crossing 15 borders in the last ten months, we felt pretty relaxed heading from Belize into Mexico and spent our first week exploring Campeche and Quintana Roo.
